British Petroleum (BP) is one of the world's largest petroleum and petrochemical companies.

The company's main activities are:
- Exploration and production of crude oil and gas;
- Refining, marketing, supply and transportation of oil and petroleum products;
- Manufacturing and marketing of petrochemicals.

BP employs 53,000 people in 100 countries across the world. In 1996 the company's turnover was $70 billion from which it made a profit of $4 billion. Incorporated in 1909, BP pioneered the development of many of the world's oil-producing areas, including the Middle East, the UK North Sea and Alaska.

The company now has major operations in Europe, the USA, Australasia and parts of Africa, and is expanding its presence in other regions, notably South East Asia, South America, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
