The region is divided into three distinct relief types: the Carpathians, Precarpathian area, and Prydnistrovia (plain). The Carpathians, which occupy almost half of the region territory, are divided into the following ridges: Horhany, Chornohora, Chyvchyny, Hryniava.
Ivano-Frankivsk region is a region rich in minerals and recreation resources. Ivano-Frankivsk region possesses the tenth part of all forest resources of Ukraine.

In the region almost all agroindustrial types of soil can be found. On the southern east there are big massifs of black earth suitable for agriculture development.

Population – 1409, 3 thousand people. Density of population – 101,4 persons per sq. km. Area – 13,9 thousand sq. km.

In the region almost all agroindustrial types of soil can be found. On the southern east there are big massifs of black earth suitable for agriculture development.

In the region 160 deposits of 24 different minerals types have been prospected:
▪ fuel-energy (oil, gas, lignite, peat);
▪ chemical (rock salt, potassium salt, sulfur, phosphorites);
▪ building materials (gypsum, marl, marble, sandstone, clay);
▪ balneal (ozokerite, mineral waters).

In the Ukrainian Carpathians there are also small deposits of iron and manganese ore, copper, zinc, silver and gold.

The total length of the regional rivers is 1554 km. 35% of the rivers are mountain, suitable for water sports development. Here there are formed the main drains of the Dnister and Prut rivers. The biggest river is the Dnister River, the length of which within the region territory is 190 km. The second river by the length is the Prut river – the left tributary of the Danube. The regional rivers have the considerable hydroelectric potential.

The Ukrainian Carpathians are rich in mineral waters. Here there are about 800 mineral springs of all types. The region is famous by its recreation resources. Here you can find 3000 plant species, including 500 herbs. The great variety of habitats provides considerable number of different animals (near 400 species). INDUSTRY

Industry is one of the leading branches of the regional economy. The private sector predominates here, the share of which in the total output is 94,2%.

In the national production the region takes leading places in production of potash fertilizers – 58,9%, caustic soda – 39,6%, wood particle boards – 30,8%, wood fiber boards – 46,6%, cement – 9,2%, slate – 42,1%, asbestos-cement pipes and sleeves – 56,3%, industrial gas-meters – 90%.

Over the last years it is observed the stable tendency to increase of industrial products output in the chemical and petrochemical industry. First of all, it is determined by the optimal load of the petrochemical complex CJSC “Lukor” capacities where the volumes of polyethylene, ethylene, propylene, benzol and other products production have been considerably increased. At the OJSC “Oriana” which is one of the co-founder of the CJSC “Lukor” the restructuring process is completed. In 2000-2001 on the base of its property 7 companies were established with the participation of investors-co-founders.

Oil and gas and oil-refining complex also holds one of the important place among the regional branches. The share of products manufactured by enterprises of this complex makes almost one third of the regional output. In the region there is a complete production cycle: well boring, oil and gas extraction and processing, transportation and supply.

The main initial condition of the stable branch functioning is raising of the resource base.

Oil and gas production subsidiary “Nadvirnanaftogas” has opened Mykulychynske and Pivdenno-Pnivske oil fields. Four new spaces for exploration have been prepared in the oil and gas production subsidiary “Dolynanaftogas”.

In the sphere of oil and gas production the new forms of management have shown themselves successfully. Joint Ukrainian-Canadian Company “Delta”, “Rozhniativnafta” Ltd., “Bohorodchanynaftogas” Ltd. have a great experience of oil and gas exploration and industrial and research operation of the discovered hydrocarbon deposits.

Solving of the existing problems in the oil and gas complex, prospects of its development are connected with the introduction of scientific projects of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas and Central Research Laboratory of the OJSC “Ukrnafta”.

One of the powerful enterprise of the region (its share in the total output is 18%) is “Naftokhimik Prykarpattia” which has a considerable productive potential in oil refining and oil products production. At present it produces near 30 kinds of products.

Burshtyn thermoelectric power station makes almost 15% of the industrial production. Here 12 energy blocks (total capacity – 2300 MW) were installed. The main technological fuel is a coal of domestic coal fields, additional – natural gas and mazut. All boilers are equipped with the combined burners.

From July, 1, 2002 Burshtyn TPS was put into the parallel operation with the united energy system of Europe. For the one year the station will function in the “Burshtyn island” regime under the Union of Centralised Transport and Energy (UCTE) control. The development of the ”Burshtyn island” generative potential is possible due to the Burshtyn TPS modernisation.

The woodworking industry is a priority branch in the region. It takes one of the leading places at the state level.

This industry was one of the first to reach the stabilization and during the last three years it extends the commodity output. This branch is characterized by the production re-orientation and listed products change. The raising of production mainly takes place at the enterprises of log-processing, production of building details from wood and boards, veneers, paper and cardboard, furniture enterprises.

Every year JV “Interplyt” which was established on the base of OJSC “Nadvirna timber plant” property part makes a considerable contribution to the production volume increase.

In 2001 it was established the timber corporation “Halychyna-lis” consolidating 9 enterprises. These enterprises develop actively logging and woodworking production due to the attracted investments.

Undertaken on the state and regional levels measures provided the stable work of the machine-building enterprises: OJSC “Ivano-Frankivsk reinforcement plant”, OJSC “Promprylad”, OJSC “Budmash”. Also the preconditions for restructuring and further privatization of the OJSC “Rodon”, “Kolomyiasilmash”, “Presmash” have been created.

At these enterprises along with the increase of the volume of output it is observed the high susceptibility to the innovations and wide range of products. In particular, at the OJSC “Ivano-Frankivsk Reinforcement Plant” the new dimension-types of wedge dampers from stainless steel for nuclear power plants were developed; at the OJSC “Promprylad” – new types of industrial gas-meters of the middle class, temperature and pressure correctors, measurement instrumentation and other devices. It is finished the setting up of the joint venture producing integrated circuits co-founders of which are OJSC “Rodon” and SC “Angstrem” (Russia).

66 enterprises belong to the light industry. This branch has great potential in production of clothes from the fur, leather goods, tafting covering, cotton yarn, outer and light clothing, working clothes, knitted wear, curtain nets.

More than four centuries the fur production in Tysmenytsia, near the regional center, is famous for its fur garments. Nowadays enterprise is an integrated production complex with the vertical structure, which dresses and dyes skins of rabbit, mink, nutria, astrakhan, fox, polar fox, musk-rat, lambskin. It manufactures hats for men, women and kids, fur-lined coats, short coats, jackets. The company was honored at the international exhibitions, every year is awarded by medals and diplomas for the best models, it is a constant participant of the Frankfort international fair.

In 1989 by the “Fur company “Tysmenytsia” and the Netherlands-German association the joint Ukrainian-Netherlands enterprise “Tykafurlux” was established. It also deals with the dressing of all types of skins and sewing of the elite fur garments. The products under the trade mark “Tykafurlux” meet the modern demands of the world fashion regarding the quality, variety of goods and design. The collection of the company includes the coats and short coats for women from mink, nutria, fox, astrakhan as well as hats for men and women from these and other furs.
