AIHA is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded by major associations of US hospitals, hospital systems, and academic research centers. AIHA is working under a series of cooperative agreements with US Agency for International Development (USAID) - a US government agency that supports economic growth, agriculture, trade, global health, democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance in many countries of the world. AIHA is establishing and coordinating professional volunteer-driven peer-to-peer partnerships between health care institutions of the USA, countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and New Independent States (NIS). Since 1992, AIHA has supported more than 80 partnerships between health care providers and academic centers of the USA and 21 NIS and CEE countries. The list of American partners includes over 80 hospitals and health care systems and 35 medical schools from 31 US state. AIHA has supported various forms of assistance and cooperation between the partners, including conferences, workshops and creation of health care knowledge networks in NIS and CEE countries.
