The Institute carries out scientific and agricultural activities in the sphere of water supply system and ecological problems of rational use and protection of Ukrainian water resources. The Institute works out conceptions, forecasts, suggestions and recommen-dations for main directions of water supply development.
It was founded in 1974. It posesses the present name since 1991.

Institute activity is aimed at creation of a scentific basis for:
- solution of water supply system and ecological problems in Ukraine;
- development of water supply system department;
- determination of ecological norms for water distributon system;
- carrying out of Ukrainian water supply system monitoring;
- water supply system economic measures in complex water usage;
- underground water usage and regulation of water stock;
- all directions of water distributon system data base creation.

Main lines of activities of URIWMEP are:
- working out of a scientific basis for development and carrying out of water distributon system;
- working out of a scientific basis for regulation, territorial and interbasin redistridibution of river watercourse;
- working out of directions of rational use of underground waters, creation of artificial filling up systems for underground waters and underground water reservoirs in Ukraine;
- working out of criteria for modelling of permitted antropogenous capacity for ecological systems of water objects and their basins, among them there are small rivers, for creation of norms for intencity and structure of water use;
- creation of a scientific basis for Ukrainian water supply and ecological monitoring;
- evaluation and forecasting of the distribution and use of water resources according to time and territory;
- scientific basis for formation of accessible for usage water resourses and water supply system ballances;
- water distribution system and economic evaluation of water resources accessible for use;
- working out and optimization of water distribution system ballances and their elements in Ukrainian river basins;
- evaluation of hydrochemical, radiochemical, hydrobyological, and sanitary and hygienic aspects of modern use of water resources;
- working out of methodological and informational basis for imrovement of Ukrainian agricultural water supply;
- working out of diffirentiated tariff norms of payment for water use considering water quality and degree of water supply of the territory;
- development of conceptual basis for water supply system and ecological norms determination and distribution of Ukrainian water resources;
- legal basis development for rational use and protection of watercourse worting out of governing technical documentation, standards, norms, rules, methodologies.

URIWMEP is able to give practical help in:
- carrying out of ecological expertize of projects;
- carrying out of field, stationary, laboratory hydrological and water distribution system and ecological surveys in river basins;
- carrying out of physical and mathematical modelling of natural processes and phenomena, and also agricultural activity using experimental and calculational basis of the institute;
- calculation of optimal regulation of river discharge common usage;
- forecasting of development of water distrbuton systems of river basins and creation of a basis for dispatching control system with consideration of favourable conditions of functioning;
- carrying out of water distribution and ecological basis of work schedule and parameters of accumulators of used waters;
- carrying out of complex evaluation of losses caused by water objects contamination and distribution of them among water users;
- working out of water distribution system and ecological basis for cleaning of river bottoms and burrial of the wastes;
- help provision in generation of operational systems and application packages for computer;
- working out of programs for automatic systems of calculation, planning and regulation of water resources use.

Activity of scientific subdivisions of the institute is provided with the modern scienific - production and service basis for conduction of scientific-research works. That includes information-calculational centre, hydrochemical and radiochemical laboratories. The whole complex of field, stationary investigations and expeditions is conducted on the basis of effective types of processing and presentation and usage of natural data, mathematical modelling and forecasting of water management and ecological state.
The institute is working in new circumstances of management. A substantial number of works is carried out on a state agreement basis at ministries orders, departments, enterprises and organizations.
