The theatre was created in Kyiv in 1922. Les' Kurbas, a famous Ukrainian producer and actor, was the founder and the director of the "Berezil' " Theatre ( that is how it used to be called).

Names of such famous actors as A. Buchma, M. Krushelnytskyi, N. Uzhviy, D. Antonovych are connected with it.

Ukrainian and Russian classical plays and world literary works are in the repertoire of the theatre.

A museum of its history where archival materials, playbills, photos are kept was created in the theatre.
