The Kiev University of occupational hygiene and occupational diseases was created on the base of occupational hygiene laboratory of Kiev in 1928.

Under this name the institution existed till 1992. In 1992 it was renamed to Institution of Medicine labour because of actualization of assignments on health protection business of able to work population of Ukraine, necessity not only of professional, but , works conditioned sickness rate.


In the institution are working 272 collaborators, 14 of them are Doctors of Science and 42 of them are candidates of science, 1 of them is academician and 1 of them is corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine, and also they are academicians of AMS of Ukraine, and 1 of them is corresponding member of RAMS.

The institution has clinical base consist of 80 beds, what allows to hold the checkup and treatment of 2000 ill people of occupational disease every year. And in polyclinic department receives the high - quality medical care more then 4500 of ill people.

On the institution base works profpathological center of Ukraine, which accomplishes methodical supervision of clinics of occupational diseases SRI profile and departments of occupational diseases of regional hospitals, and introduction in the practice of new methods of diagnostics and treatment of occupational diseases.

In the institution realizes 40 - 50 research efforts, including the state programs, contest AMS and NAS of Ukraine, as well as International grants, and contracts with the scientific institutions of different countries.

In the institution created and functionates modern experimental and technical base for holding the research studies - study of industrial particulate pollutant operations, determination of microquantity of toxic substances, E-field radiation of magnetic diapason, noise and vibration; functionate unique welding - inoculating complex for the toxicologic and hygienic researches of new welding materials, unique equipment for differential diagnostics of irradiation cataract.

The insitution accomplishes complex fulfilment of researches with the range of institutions of technical and biological description of NAS of Ukraine, the institutions of medicine description - AMS and MH of Ukraine, chairs of medicine institutes, as well as scientific institutions in some of the foreign countries (Russia, USA, Belgium, Poland).

The institute constantly spreads international ties with VOOZ and MOP. Since 1973 on the base of institute have been created Center of occupational hygiene in agriculture, which cooperate with VOOZ. Routinely holds interregional seminars in re of occupational hygiene in agriculture, occupational morbidity, using of pesticides in modern conditions for CIS, Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe countries.

In 2002 on the base of Institute was helded seminar under the aegis of UNEP and FAO of introduction of Stockholm and Roterdam convention in Central and East Europe countries.

The institute holds the researches of three projects of Global program of VOOZ of occupational hygiene in 2002 - 2005.

As a result of the International scientific cooperation was elaborated unified hygienic standards, unified methodological methods appraisement of the technology, equipment, chemical agents; improved methods of early exposure of injurious effect of harmful industrial factors. In recent years in institute to fulfil the range of scientific developments, which have significant importance both for theoretical and practical medicine.

On the base of experimental and clinicohygienic researches:

- established a new appropriateness of material cumulation of heavy metals in experimental animals organism;
- precised immune and biochemical mechanism of dyscrasia under forming isolated saturnism, cadmium, manganous and lead - cadmium intoxications; we got new information about interpretation of notions "norm", "fore-pathology", experimental - theoretical grounds of notions "primary", "secondary" adaptation, "reserve of adaptation ", under the actions of heavy metals;
- proved the presence of genetic conditioned individual sensitivity of human organizm to the influence of leadide and proposed immunogenotypic markers for their determination;
- created simulator quantification penetration of chemical agents through skin by physical-chemical qualities and recieved dentification evidence ofappropriate of their using for the valuation of risks of entrance of pesticides through the skin to the organizm which is work properly contacted with it;
- explored peculiarities of formation mechanics of capacity for work and state of health for operations staff in different national economy branches to have the influence of industrial work factor in conditions of increased psychoemotional tension; establishment role of activity level of central nervous and cardiovascular system.

On the base of epidemiological researches:
- we got priority data relative to scientific substantiation criterions risks of development of occupational disease of people which worked at coal-mining industry, mechanical engineering and agriculture in Ukraine (in particular are black-lung disease, vibratory diseases);
- established that reproductive health of women, who are working in Ukraine's agriculture, for the period from 1980 to 1999 had greatly deteriorated, established reliable correlation dependence development of female sphere diseases because of environment, conditions of work, appliance load and woman's age. On basis of recieved data elaborated recommendations about improving of medical care of women, which live and work in rural area;
- on the base of international experience analysis about the problem of occupational carcinoma developed guidance fundamentals of evaluation of conditions of work as the risk factor of cancerous diseases and recomendations about improvement of revelation system and registration of occupational carcinoma inUkraine;
- at the selection of more than 10000 of examined liquidators of consequences of emergency on CHAPP was approved and found the confirmation of hypothesis about dependence of dependence and weight of cataract of radiation dose, what allowed to develope new strategy of epidemiological, ophthalmologic checkup of workers, who felt influence of ionizing radiation.

The results of institute research studies actively introducing in practice. On the basis of scientific researches and summarizing of international experience was created the fundations of State sanitary legislation in hygiene and physiology of labour branch, namely worked up more than 30 DCT, over 100 sanitary regulations, 400 methodical instructions and recomendations.Science based and approved 107 GDK and OBRV harmful substances in air of work area of working area.

More than 3 thousend scientific proceeding was published by research worker of the institute, including 90 monographs and manuals; received 35 author's certificate and patents.

Manual "Occupational hygiene in agricultural" developed by Institute was marked off premium of AMS USSR by name of F. F. Erisman, and textbook for IHE "Common hygiene" and cycle of scientific works "Heavy metals as dangerous for human pollutant of enviroment" - was marked off State premia of Ukraine.

For the post-war years in the institute was prepared more than 50 Doctors of Medicine and 200 candidate of medicine.

On the base of institute since 1967 had functionate particularized academic council, in which for this period defend more than 80 thesis for a Doctor's degree and 243 Ph.D. thesis, working Republican problem commission of "Occupational hygiene and occupational diseases".
