M.P. Semenenko Institute of geochemistry, mineralogy and ore formation of the National Academy of sciences of Ukraine (Institute of geochemistry and physics of minerals (IGFM) before 1993, Institute of geochemistry, mineralogy and ore formation of the National Academy of sciences of Ukraine before 2006), was founded on January 9, 1969 on the base of the Sector of geochemistry, mineralogy, petrography and minerals and the Sector of metallogeny of the Institute of geological sciences of the National Academy of sciences of Ukraine with the purposes of study of lithosphere composition and evolutions; investigation of mechanisms of formation and localization of mineral deposits; discovery of geochemical, mineralogical and petrological criteria for prediction and exploration of mineral deposits and ore occurences; the synthesis of minerals and discovery of new types of mineral resources.
