ISS carries out research in the field of software engineering and informatics and performs works on construction of customised computer systems. Today ISS staff body consists of 200 highly qualified scientists, system analysts, programmers and engineers. Extensive experience gained at ISS in developing turnkey computer systems for home and foreign companies and high scientific and engineering potential allow to develop high quality reliable computer systems in short terms and at a reasonable price.

Main Research Directions of ISS:
- theoretical and applied problems of programming systems and technologies, models and techniques of software engineering, quality evaluation, standardization and certification of software systems
- formal logic foundations, methods and facilities for construction of intelligent information systems, data and knowledge banks, data mining and data warehousing
- theory, methods and software of distributed and parallel computation for multiprocessor and network computer systems, mathematical simulation, system analysis, decision-making support and complex system optimization in different branches of science and industry.

ISS carried out successfully a number of following projects:
- instrumental technological software complex for performing content analysis investigation of full text data bases
- complex of software facilities for expert decision-making support in complicated weakly formalised subject domains
- hardware/software complex for information security in local computer networks from nonauthorised accesses with user identification by microprocessor cards
- instrumental software facilities for design and implementation of general purpose distributed object-oriented systems methodology for preliminary financial and economical ground in construction of organizational automated systems
- GIS-technology for investiganion of environmental influence on human health;
- computer system for support and maintenance of air navigation data bases, documents and charts;
- customised software simulation complex «Cosmonaut» for investigation and evaluation of blood circulation of cosmonauts on all stages of space flight.
- techniques for optimization of human-machine interaction based on concept of adaptable computer.
- ISS has significant experience in carrying out projects for international companies and organizations in the Switzerland, Hungary, USA, France, Czech Republic, Germany.
