In 1920, on the basis of the Specialized Secondary Mechanical School, the Mykolayiv Shipbuilding Institute was established. In January 1949 the Institute was named after Admiral S.O. Makarov, a legendary countryman. In 1994 it acquired the status of the Ukrainian State Maritime Technical University (USMTU). In 2004 it acquired the status of the National University of Shipbuilding named after admiral Makarov.
The National University of Shipbuilding is the leading Ukrainian educational institution training specialists for the shipbuilding industry. The University has six faculties and a preparatory department. Educational buildings, student hostels and sport facilities occupy 40 hectares in a picturesque place of the city. There is a library at the University having large numbers of scientific, educational, specialized, and methodological books and periodicals.
The University employs highly qualified academic staff including 42 Professors and about 250 Assistant Professors. Branches of the University function in Kherson, Kerch, and Kyiv.
Since its establishment, the University has trained more than 33,500 engineers. Its graduates work for shipbuilding companies in Ukraine and CIS companies. Many of them have become important executive officers and researchers.
The University maintains scientific contacts with leading institutions of the Academies of Sciences of Ukraine and Russia, as well as with firms and educational institutions in Germany, USA, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia, France, Bulgaria, and China.
