Kyiv National Economic University was founded in 1906. By the Decree of President of Ukraine L.D.Kuchma of February 27, 1997 the University was awarded with the title of National for a considerable contribution to the development of higher education and economic science, great efforts in training highly qualified specialists, and for its acknowledgement in Ukraine and worldwide.

Since its inception KNEU has always been the largest economic higher educational establishment in Ukraine. The University comprises the founding higher educational establishment in Kiev (9 departments), Kryvyi Rig Economic Institute (6 departments), Crimean Economic Institute (Simferopol; 4 departments), Kyiv and Simferopol specialized colleges.

Professional training is carried out in “Economic sciences”, “Management”, “Law” offering 10 specialities of different qualification levels: “Bachelor”, “Specialist”, “Master” of full-time, evening and extra-mural education according to existing legal regulations and curricula.

To ensure a high level of training of bachelors and masters, new subjects have been introduced and completely new curricula have been suggested. The library of the University, set up in 1908, is considered the best University library in Ukraine. The University can boast of 750,000 Ukrainian and foreign publications of scientific and educational literature. Every year the library services nearly 250,000 readers.

The University holds a leading position among economic higher educational establishments due to high level of teaching, a continuous updating of curricula and their selection, its highly qualified staff and modern methods of teaching activity, broad international ties.

Having taken all these factors into account the Ministry of Education of Ukraine authorized the University with the function of scientific-methodological coordination in training economists in the country. Since 1996 by the decision of the state accreditation commission, the University has been functioning as a leading educational establishment, organizing the performance of the Specialization Board in licensing and accreditation training of economists.

In 1995 the University became a member of International Association of Educational Establishments that offer Master Programmes on Business Administration and ensure their performance according to internationally recognized standards.

Long-term experience in scientific research work, close contacts of the University researchers with scientific and research centres of Ukraine and foreign countries laid the foundation for setting up a number of research centres in the University: on book-accounting analysis and auditing, banking and money circulation, state finance and taxation, statistics, economic theory, etc.

The Information Systems Centre was set up with the aim to facilitate the use of new information technologies. It provides the effective management and maintenance of computer hardware and software. Since 1998 the University has been connected to the Internet.

One of the main objectives of the University is training and upgrading highly qualified teachers and professors. For the last five years academic boards of the University have conferred 35 Doctor degrees and 216 Candidate degrees.

The University maintains close cooperation with leading Universities of the USA, Germany, Great Britain, France, Poland, China, Uzbekistan and others. It takes an active part in European programmes such as TACIS, TEMPUS, INTAS.

The Ukrainian School of Banking and Finance and the Ukrainian Insurance Training Centre were founded according to the TACIS programme. At the present time the project for the development of economic law is being carried out at the Law Department of the University.

The Ukrainian Stock Market Development Institute and the Department of Advanced Professional Training cater for upgrading specialists in economics and management.

The Research Institute for Economic Development, Ukrainian Association of Marketing and Ukrainian-British association of the teachers and professors of accounting were set up to coordinate research carried out by the professors of the University.

KNEU has its own publishing house, with the capacity of publishing 1200 printer’s sheets of teaching and scientific literature.
The University has a well-equipped health care centre for prophylaxis and treatment of therapeutic patients - students and the staff.

The University boasts of various sports facilities: a gymnasium, a swimming pool, and two fitness halls.

The floor space of class-rooms, laboratories, reading-halls, a depository, and accommodation for students in the hostels, is constantly increasing.
A new hostel, which can accommodate 550 students, has just been built.

The construction of the 4-th academic and laboratory building and a library with a depository for 1,500 copies is planned. Besides that, the construction of the stadium with sports yard and stands is under way.
