Institute of Neuro-Surgery named after A.P. Romodanov of Academy of Medicine of Ukraine was founded in 1950 on the basis and as a successor of Kyiv Psychoneurological Institute.
The founder of the Institute and its first director was academician A. I. Arutyunov, the disciple of academician N. N. Burdenko. He headed the institute from 1950 till 1964. According to his idea the institute was set up as comprehensive scientific-research medical establishment where specialists of interrelated professions worked together with neuro-surgeons.
This comprehensive principle determined further national neuro-surgery development and contributed to the development of such new branches as neuro-radiology, oto-neurology, neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-physiology, neuro-psychopathology, etc.
The institute carries out developments of fundamental and applied aspects of such important scientific problems as complex treatment of nervous system growths, working out and clinical application of new intravascular operations, neurotransplantations; neuroimmunology has achieved significant progress; a system of neuro-surgical aid to the new-borns with natal craniocerebral injury. As to these trends the institute occupies the leading place among neuro-surgery institutions of the developed countries.

For the last years the staff of the institute has been paying special attention to the problems of diagnostics, surgical and combined treatment of brain-growth, pathogenesis, diagnostics and treatment of central nervous system traumas and their consequences, surgical treatment of the most difficult forms of vascular pathology of brain; study of how small doses of radiation affect the brain; creation of efficient methods of prophylaxis and therapy of infectious inflamatory complications of neuro-surgical patients, experimental study of epileptic centre formation, treatment of children hydrocephalus, neuro-surgical patients reabilitation, study of embryonic nervous system mechanism when it is being transported to the recepient's brain.

Today the staff of the institute counts 1042 employees, among them 102 employees have a scientific degree. The clinical basis consists of 15 profile departments for 370 beds where 6.5 thousand patients are treated every year.
Surgical activities are carried out in 15 operation halls where about 3500 operationa are performed annually.
About 25 thousand patients receive specialized advisory aid in the polyclinic department.
