Established in 1930, it is the only institution in Ukraine and CIS countries that trains shorebased specialists for water transport. During the years of its existence over 30000 specialists were trained for CIS countries and over 1200 - for 69 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. At the moment over 4000 students including 100 foreign students get education at the University.

Tuition is held at 7 faculties on 10 specialists. At 28 departments of the University there work 28 academicians and associate members, 46 professors and doctors, 152 associate professors, candidates of sciences (PhD).

The chairs have 25 laboratories, some of a unique character, i.e. testing pool, aerodynamic simulator and some others facilitating up-to date research.

In education modern technical aids are widely applied: such as cinema, audio, TV, video recording, satellite television, etc, there functions educational TV center that has transmission center able to transmit information for work with the students in the auditoriums. All this, together with the auditoriums equipped for movie and lingaphone classrooms, makes a reliable material foundation for teaching students.

A considerable contribution in education is made by a computer center of the University (in detail), that consists of 6 classrooms for 150 computer seats, provided with PC of Pentium class, having a local network and access to internet.

The University has a research and technical library that has over 700 thousand volumes of books and possesses a unique selection of books in the University`s specialists. The library occupied a specially erected building that has repository rooms, studies and two reading halls.

The students have an opportunity to get practical training at enterprises such as shipping companies ship-repair and ship-building yards, sea and rivers trade ports of Odessa, Yuzny, Ilyichevsk, Izmail, Reni and also at other enterprises of marine and river transport of Ukraine.

The University has a sports complex with a play-ground hall, specialized halls for wresting, heavy athletics, table tennis, aerobics and two simulation halls. Besides that the University has its quay at the Black Sea Yachting Club that moors 13 University cruiser yachts.

In case of necessity the students? trainees and post-graduates are provided with a dormitory (with rooms for two).
